Richard's mom slapped him in the face because maybe the father was not in Richard's life and his mom was fed up.His mom was upset because she had to play the role of a father.So she decided to take it out on Richard.Another reason why Richard got slapped is because he probably constantly got bullied ,and his mom just had to slap some sense into him.The last reason is because Richard's mom thought it was time for him to become a man.So it was like she slapped manhood into him.That is why Richard's mother slapped him in his face.
